The primary focus of the Bachelor of Architectural Design is the design studio. In the studio students develop knowledge and skills acquired in supporting courses, by working on problems that increase in complexity as the program progresses. Key areas of the program that support and are integrated into design include architectural technology, history, theory and people environment studies, environmental design, traditional drawing skills, and computer aided drawing skills.

The studio is central to the program as a pedagogical tool and as a physical setting. As such, the Design courses encompass a range of activities including group and one-on-one tutorials, one-day studio exercises or exams, and critiques.

Design also includes site visits, exhibitions, and a dedicated series of lectures relevant to the project work at hand, largely produced and delivered by the course coordinator, but also with input from outside practitioners and experts.

The Master of Architecture program is the top tier of a two-tier program consisting of a three-year undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Architectural Design) and a two-year postgraduate coursework degree (Master of Architecture). Ten months’ work experience are required to enrol in the Masters degree. The first year is designed to build on skills acquired in the undergraduate degree and through professional experience, and focuses on the synthesis of ideas from design, environmental and technological studies.

Design studio projects explore the relationship between architecture, context and environment. Design briefs allow study of complex and significant building types. Constructional, environmental and structural principles are applied to projects requiring an increasing level of detail. Students are introduced to research through two courses undertaken in Year 1, selected from topics across a range of sub-disciplinary areas.

In the final year design studios, students have the opportunity to demonstrate the skills acquired throughout their studies in a final comprehensive design project.  Graduation projects are chosen in response to a specific urban design context. The principles of business management and project management are introduced in architectural practice courses.

Two final research courses allow students to pursue further elective studies or undertake a final dissertation in an area of specialist interest.

Academic Requirements: Bachelor of Architectural Design from UQ (or equivalend with portfolio submission), and at least 10 months professional experience.
