This course provides students with the specialised skills and knowledge required to work as a Dental Technician. The course deals with the construction of dentures, bridges, crowns and other dental appliances. It also covers the repair and modification of these appliances. Other technical skills attained include working with dental impressions, moulds, casts and models.

Gives students ample opportunity to practice in a working laboratory, research industry practice in the computer resource centre and take the extra time needed to reinforce learning.

This qualification will provide you with the skills to apply for the position of Dental Technician.

This course also provides an excellent gateway into studying for a qualification as a Dental Prosthetics.
As a dental technician you will work in close liaison with referring dental practitioners and specialists.

An oral health therapist is a registered health professional who performs preventive and operative dentistry on patients of all ages. The scope of practice of an oral health therapist includes examination, risk assessment, diagnosis of dental caries and periodontal diseases, scaling and cleaning, application of preventive medicaments, oral hygiene instruction, impressions, whitening, administration of local anaesthesia, periodontal debridement, orthodontics, restorations, stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies, extractions and oral health promotion. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills are also required.

Work Integrated Learning

The program includes a large amount of work integrated learning time in pre-clinical and clinical dental settings as well as learning with and from students in other health programs.

Oral health therapists work in a variety of settings including school and community dental clinics as well as private general and specialist dental practices. Graduates usually work within a dental team environment as an employee, contractor, associate, partner or owner. Oral health therapists can earn high starting salaries of approximately $50 per hour in the private sector. There is a high demand for graduates particularly in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia.

The five-year Bachelor of Dental Science will provide the undergraduate curriculum foundation to qualify as a dentist. There will be a significant focus on clinical education and the program will utilise a mix of didactic and scenario-based presentation. The course will be accredited by the Australian Dental Council for registration by the Dental Board of New South Wales under the Dental Practice Act 2001.

 

Graduates will be registered as Dentists in New South Wales and consequently in other Australian states and New Zealand by mutual recognition.
